St Anne’s parkrun # 62 – 20/12/2014

182 runners joined us for the 62nd edition of St. Anne's parkrun on 20th December. Conditions were ideal for the run, with 29 personal bests recorded despite the proliferation of sore heads as a result of pre-Christmas over-indulgence. A number of our elves and runners alike were decked out in festive garb, adding to the seasonal atmosphere around the event. Brian Christensen and Una Cherry (in a fabulous Mrs. Claus outfit) fulfilled pacing duties at 25 mins and 30 mins respectively.

This was my first time back directing at St. Anne's since the birth of my twins 11 weeks ago and it was great to be back to oversee proceedings once again. It is thanks to the strong team of run directors and volunteers that I was able to step away from the onsite direction over the past few weeks, knowing that the event is in safe hands! So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian Christensen, Mark McComish, Nici Roechert, Jamie Plummer, Susan Holmgren, Gillian Kenny, and John O'Connor for your hard work and special contribution to St. Anne's parkrun over the past 62 events.

We had a number of runners making their debut at St. Anne's (28 first timers), including a group from the Runners Support Page. We hope you all enjoyed the event and will see you back here soon.

Congratulations also to Dearbhla Woods, another parkrunner from St. Anne's who has gone on to become Irish parkrunner of the month.... I think this is our 7th winner, a super return and a great reflection on our runners here. Well done Dearbhla.

St Anne’s parkrun – Event # 60 (06/12/2014)

St Annes parkrun
Event number 60
6th December 2014

The festive season is upon us, Christmas parties are widespread, yet 175 warriors still made it out for the weekly run here in St. Annes.
It was an eventful day for a good and bad reason.

Bad reason being that because one of our barcode scanning devices was not working, a lot of people didn't initially get a time posted in the results. I can only offer my sincere apologies for this, and hope that we don't see a repeat. Thankfully, most (I think) people got in touch with their position and I was able to rectify it. If you are still off the list then please get in touch and we will try to get you back in.

Good news is that St. Annes has nominated DEARBHLA WOODS as parkrunner of the month. She has ran and volunteered numerous times and does either one happily and enthusiastically. So best of luck to her that she gets the national recognition we feel she deserves.

The weeks results and current standings are below.

Big thanks to all our volunteers, without whom (we cannot stress enough) the event would NOT happen. Our heroes this week were:

Dearbhla WOODS • Denise KELLEHER • Gary KENNY • Gillian KENNY • Jamie PLUMMER • Jenny COLBERT • John O'CONNOR • Judith MCMAHON • Keishia TAYLOR • Keith COADY • Keith FLEMING • Padraig O FAININ • Richard O'CONNOR • Úna NÍ CHRIBÍN

Thanks again to our volunteers and our athletes and I hope to see you all at another event soon.

John O'Connor

St. Anne’s parkrun – Event #50 – First Birthday!

We were blessed with tremendous conditions on Saturday morning as 276 runners descended upon St. Anne's park for the 50th running of St. Anne's parkrun, which more importantly marked the first birthday of our event. As Event Director, looking back over the last 12 months and the c. 6 months lead up to the start of our first parkrun back in September 2013, I'm proud of the event this has become, proud of the contribution of the volunteers and event team to the continuity of the event and also proud of the community event this has become. Well done everyone, let's keep this event going and continue to grow!

To mark the occasion, we presented 6 prizes to very deserving recipients who have performed to an exceptional level at both volunteer and/or running level. Dublin City Council Sports and Recreation Section, our sponsor, kindly donated the prizes that we used - a big thanks to Aideen O'Connor and all at DCC for those.

The six prizewinners were as follows:

Parkrunner of the Year - Jamie Kenny; Winners of the Male and Female Points Competition - David Shiel and Una Cherry; Most Improved Parkrunner - Brian Murtagh and Volunteers of the Year - Richie O'Connor and Stella Kuit. Congratulations to all.

We had a very special guest join us to mark the occasion - The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Christy Burke presented the prizes and also addressed the runners, before officially starting the event. Near FM were also present and recorded some of the day's proceedings - listen out for some clips from them on this Saturday morning's sports show with Fergus Carroll.

Piranha Tri Club also joined us in great numbers - as runners and as volunteers, incorporating their yearly 5km race into our parkrun in honour of their former coach John Davis who sadly passed away in 2007. Thank you Piranha for providing 2 of our 3 pacers, all the bike marshals and a number of on course marshals too!

Malahide parkrun Run Director and Friend of St. Anne's, Eoin Fegan took hundreds of top quality photos on Saturday, which can be seen on our facebook site - thanks Eoin.... you are welcome back anytime and everytime.

Tir na nOg cafe at the Red Stables hosted a get-together for all parkrunners afterwards - thank you Tir na nOg - your gift of all those scones went down a treat!

St Annes Parkrun Event #42 02/08/2014

Well, Saturday was a fine day for the ducks. On a day that saw a month's worth of rain come down upon us, 119 hardy bucks and belles descended upon the park for the 42nd edition of St. Anne's parkrun. The course boasted a super water feature this week, just to add a little spice to proceedings. Thankfully we had an enthusiastic band of volunteers who made sure that the event went ahead safely. They are the real heroes this week, and I would like to recognise them up front:

Anne MC COMISH  •  Brendan TANNAM  •  David WALLEY  •  Dearbhla WOODS  •  Eddie MCGOVERN  •  Emma FAGAN  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Judith MCMAHON  •  Kate LENNON  •  Kathryn KILLEEN  •  Lynn HOWARD  •  Nicole FITZPATRICK  •  Nicole ROECHERT  •  Susan HOLMGREN

Men's placings:
Eoin DURKAN (SM30-34) of Aberdeen AAC, was first over the line in 17:08 - first appearance.
David JACKSON (SM25-29) (Unattached) was second over the line in 17:32.
Neil BOWDEN (VM35-39) of Dell Trotters, was third over the line in 19:12.

Women's placings:
Aileen HOOPER (SW30-34) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first (22nd overall) over the line in 21:38 - third time in 7 appearances.
Sharon WOODS (VW45-49) of Crusaders Athletic Club, was second (35th overall) over the line in 22:32 - was first to finish once before.
Aoife STACK (SW25-29) (Unattached) was third (36th overall) over the line in 22:34.

Annual Points Competition:

We are fast approaching the finish line in the first annual points competition at St. Anne's. David Shiel is the runaway leader in the Men's competition, but the Women's competition is a more closely-fought affair, and we may yet need to organise some sort of head-to-head duel to separate them at the end of the current cycle.

Current standing in the Men's annual points competition:
David SHIEL (Unattached) 2622 pts.
Brian CHRISTENSEN (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 2298 pts.
Gregory O'BEIRNE (Unattached) 2189 pts.

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition:
Una CHERRY (Garda Athletic Club) 2861 pts.
Jenny COLBERT (Unattached) 2725 pts.
Emer FANNING (Unattached) 2443 pts.

Some important notes:

  • We are losing 3-5 tokens on average per week. We have lost well over 100 tokens since the event started 42 weeks ago due to people not returning them. Tokens cost money. We don't get paid for parkrun, so the cost to replace these comes out of our pockets!
  • We will be enforcing the 'No barcode, no result' policy from this weekend. Previously we have accommodated runners as much as possible but adding the names manually is adding considerable workload for the volunteers.
  • We always need volunteers, please dont assume someone else will do it! Check out the roster for gaps, and sign yourself up!
  • Our first anniversary run will take place on 27th September. Put the date in your diary!

Full results and a complete event history can be found on the St Annes parkrun Results Page.

The last day of May brought sunshine to the glorious tree-lined paths of St. Anne's park as 239 runners took the opportunity to kick off their weekend the parkrun way at the 34th St. Anne's parkrun. St Anne’s parkrun Event #33 24/05/14

The 24th of May 2014 marked the debut of John O'Connor as Run Director at what many consider to be the finest parkrun in the world - St. Anne's. In between chasing Harry, Niall and the 1D boyz, John and his team of well-drilled volunteers successfully oversaw a field of 200 runners as they completed the beautiful One-Directioned, tree-lined circuit. While most were happy that the rain held off, Captain John saw this as a missed opportunity, with no excuse to wear his 1D poncho, as That's What Makes Him Beautiful.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered thus far and would encourage those who haven't yet to please do so. Over recent weeks we have seen a number of new volunteers come forward, which is great to see - let's keep that trend up. Keep an eye on the roster at http://www.parkrun.ie/stannes/futureroster/ . One Direction Fan? Check when John O'Connor is next on the roster and you can tell him the Story of Your Life. Send us a facebook message or email us at stanneshelpers@parkrun.com.

St Annes parkrun Event # 24 – 8th March 2014

Winds of hurricane proportions hit the runners at our 24th event as Colm Kernan took the reins as Run Director for the first time. The cool, calm and collected Mr. Kernan did not let the conditions affect him as he directed 206 runners on the day, of whom 47 were first timers.

Mark MURPHY (SM25-29) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first over the line in 17:40 - first time in 3 appearances. D MATTHEWS (VM40-44) (Unattached) was second over the line in 18:12. Ciaran BANNAN (SM35-39) (Unattached) was third over the line in 18:18.

For the ladies, Deirdre BYRNE (SW30-34) (Unattached) was first (7th overall) over the line in 19:03 - second time in 2 appearances. Áine KENNY (SW25-29) (Unattached) was second (13th overall) over the line in 19:41. Catherine LYNCH (VW40-44) (Unattached) was third (17th overall) over the line in 20:09 - has been first to finish on 2 previous occasions.

The all important 98th place finisher this week was Una Ni Chribin. We are delighted to say that Token 98 remains in our possession after Saturday's run. This may well have had something to do with the theft-proof token that Una was given upon finishing the run.

Next Saturday (15th March) sees the graduation of runners who were following the Irish Times 'GetRunning' program. http://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/get-running . The runners following this program have been working up to running a 5k, with the target of a parkrun on 15th March. We'll have a 30 minute pacer at St. Anne's this Saturday, and we're also planning a group warm-up before the run kicks off, so get there early! Welcome to all GetRunning participants - looking forward to meeting you on Saturday!
