St Anne’s parkrun Event number 183 20th May 2017

Amidst the now normal perma sunshine that inhabits St Annes parkrun we had 398 athletes take to the tarmac to complete the 183rd parkrun in St Annes Park.

They came from far and wide to see what all the fuss was about - in fact Joacim Jansson and Per Stenmark travelled from Sweden for their first parkrun ever, so they have started with the best one. Plymouth Triathlon Club, Garda Athletic Club, Norfolk Gazelles and clubs from as far away as Sportsworld, Drumcondra, Crusaders and Clonliffe Harriers made the trip.

Special mention goes to Peter Smyth who completed his 50th parkrun and marked the occasion with a new PB. Special special mention goes to Orla McLarnon who having completed 31 runs in St. Annes, moved to London but came back to celebrate her 50th parkrun back in her home course. Many congratulations to you both.

While we are giving special mentions, Meghan Traynor famously declared that it is all about the base but for us it is all about the volunteers. Volunteers, Volunteers, Volunteers. Having slept soundly on Friday night with a full roster in my back pocket, there were 3 people who showed up on Saturday morning looking to help and a role was quickly found for them. Your parkrun can not function without the volunteers behind it. They are highly visible on the day and deserve great credit and thanks. Everyone can be that person in the hi-vis vest. All of the roles are straight forward and are easily explained. There is nothing complicated involved and the reward is a great sense of fulfilment and community involvement.  Contact the run on stannesoffice@parkrun.com or the Facebook page to get involved. There is a special reserved table for volunteers in Olives after the run.

Don't forget it is pacer Saturday tomorrow so you can volunteer and still run.

All the stats from the 20th of May are below.

See you tomorrow,

Richie

St Anne’s parkrun Event # 166 – 14/01/2017

The air was freezing, parts of the course were slippy and covered in frost as a lone run director parked the car and started to unload the equipment. Our pre event set up regular Conor arrived with an update on the condition of some of the shaded areas - they were passable, parkrun was a go. Then the runners started to gather........

The crowds swelled, Operation Transformation participants arrived and there was a large crowd surrounding our new runners briefer - the delights of St. Annes parkrun being passed on to a new generation of parkrunners. the delights of the hill but only at the end of a lap, that downhill section along Watermill Road. All those joys ahead of them.

After the run directors briefing, where Paul Duffy was applauded on his Irish parkrunner of the month award, all headed to the start. There was a short delay while the time keeper was found and they were off. John Sharry started his 50th parkrun along with what seemed like thousands of runners and walkers. Jamie Plummer and Lucy Barrett took the roles as Operation Transformation ambassadors, encouraging and supporting as they made their way around the course, which was populated by 6 marshals to remind everyone about frost, park users but most importantly pointing the way. We had a number of people who achieved their goal of doing the first lap, 2.5km done and congratulations to you all for making this step.

Lap 2 complete and the participants made their way through the extended funnel, past the 2 time keepers and 5 funnel managers, through to the loving care of our token team and then into the arms of the barcode scanners. Clockwork has nothing on our team. John Sharry has now completed 50 runs and his milestone t-shirt awaits. Meanwhile Sarah Kelly became the latest member of our 98 club.

When the dust finally settled we had a new St. Annes parkrun record, suitably marked by a 5 yard sprint to be the person who broke the previous record. 492 people crossed the finish line and history was made. The day was captured by Meryl who posted her superb photos in the afternoon with the tagging and comments commencing.

28 volunteers kept everything running so smoothly that you would think we were on ice. As always we would like to thank them all for the support. For anyone who is looking to get involved please get in touch. The good news is that the rosters are filling up fast and long may it continue.

The details of the day are below. See you all again on Saturday wgere we may break the 500 mark. Keep running all.

Richie

St Anne’s parkrun Event number 152 15th October 2016

On what can only be described as a horrendous morning in the pi**ing of rain in St Annes we still had a very commendable 187 runners who turned to take on our course. Of course it was a lovely day by the time coffee was over.

It was a very cosmopolitan group with a number of first time parkrunners as well as a number of people running in St. Annes for the first time and the Evening Herald were there to capture the event on camera as part of their ongoing parkrun tour.

We offered a warm (in the cold) welcome to Andrea and Theresa who visited us from Leigh on Sea Striders in Southend and also to visitors from Maitland, Australia.

We could not forget our own Gillian Kenny's birthday and also Eva O'Beirne who was one of our many volunteers, to whom our full appreciation goes out every week.

All was going so well until we realised that there were no tokens, (holding up hand as guilty) so we went with plan B which involved the forming of lines with everyone prompting the scanners with their position number. I want to thank all those who jumped into action to help out here. It was the first time ever that we had a 42 way tie for 1st finisher. I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding and as some parkrunners have commented, it kept everyone in the same place chatting so I hope that everyone met someone new and it can be claimed as a mini success. Hopefully everyone who ran has got their result at this stage, if not let me know.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, we have asked if the water can be turned off for the morning with the heat turned up a little.

St. Anne’s parkrun #115 – Run Report

5 days later and I think the excitement of last week has finally started to subside.

We had an amazing morning with a little bit of coldness but that was soon forgotten when we got down to business. 468 people turned up from first timers to people with over 100 parkruns, walkers to sprinters. That is the magic of parkrun is that everyone is equal, you challenge yourself and see how you fare.

It was a magnificent turnout out due to Operation Transformation, the Lord Mayor and the 5 Alive crew and our regular runners, Raheny Community First Responders and Raheny GAA. Noticed that the GAA crew were a little worried about 6 in the evening as to how long more one of their crew would be before they finished.

Then there was the volunteers, the magnificent volunteers who make it look like everything is a piece of cake, which it is as long as we have volunteers. And speaking of cake we also had Olives café afterwards.

To top it all off the post about the run reached over 7500 people so we are officially famous.

Obviously the reference in the briefing to "heroes just for one day" was a reference to David Bowie, and the "I will count to 3, there will not be a 4" was Alan Rickman as "Hans Gruber" in Die Hard, we had some movie nerds (like me) who got this.

Now here is the science bit, the stats from last week are

One final note: please do not take the plastic tokens home - we need them!

This week there were 272 runners, of whom 29 were first timers and 65 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 13 different athletics clubs took part.

This week's full results can be found here.

Until next time, keep on running!

St. Anne’s parkrun – Run Report – Event #96

Saturday 5th September brought us parkrun No. 96, only 3 more to birthday no. 2 and 4 to our 100th parkrun.

The day had multiple key moments.

The run where Una Ní Chribin was announced as parkrunner of the month and completed her 50th parkrun. Congratulations Una on your achievements.

The run where Deirdre O'Grady completed her 50th parkrun. Congratulations Deirdre.

The run where we had all the volunteer slots filled by Thursday morning, much to the relief of the Run Director. This was a great result for us all as volunteers and runners are vital to the continued success of the run. We would recommend that everyone gets involved in volunteering. Only then will you be told about the secret handshake and given the keys of the kingdom. Thank you very much to the amazing volunteers we had on the day.

The day where our photographer took over 370 amazing photographs and yours truly took over a day to download and upload them. Worth the wait we are sure you agree.

Along with all this we had 271 runners taking on our fine course, including several first timers and also tourists from Manchester. Congratulations to you all.

All the statistics are included below, se you all on Saturday for our next run.
