St Annes Parkrun Event #42 02/08/2014

Well, Saturday was a fine day for the ducks. On a day that saw a month's worth of rain come down upon us, 119 hardy bucks and belles descended upon the park for the 42nd edition of St. Anne's parkrun. The course boasted a super water feature this week, just to add a little spice to proceedings. Thankfully we had an enthusiastic band of volunteers who made sure that the event went ahead safely. They are the real heroes this week, and I would like to recognise them up front:

Anne MC COMISH  •  Brendan TANNAM  •  David WALLEY  •  Dearbhla WOODS  •  Eddie MCGOVERN  •  Emma FAGAN  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Judith MCMAHON  •  Kate LENNON  •  Kathryn KILLEEN  •  Lynn HOWARD  •  Nicole FITZPATRICK  •  Nicole ROECHERT  •  Susan HOLMGREN

Men's placings:
Eoin DURKAN (SM30-34) of Aberdeen AAC, was first over the line in 17:08 - first appearance.
David JACKSON (SM25-29) (Unattached) was second over the line in 17:32.
Neil BOWDEN (VM35-39) of Dell Trotters, was third over the line in 19:12.

Women's placings:
Aileen HOOPER (SW30-34) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first (22nd overall) over the line in 21:38 - third time in 7 appearances.
Sharon WOODS (VW45-49) of Crusaders Athletic Club, was second (35th overall) over the line in 22:32 - was first to finish once before.
Aoife STACK (SW25-29) (Unattached) was third (36th overall) over the line in 22:34.

Annual Points Competition:

We are fast approaching the finish line in the first annual points competition at St. Anne's. David Shiel is the runaway leader in the Men's competition, but the Women's competition is a more closely-fought affair, and we may yet need to organise some sort of head-to-head duel to separate them at the end of the current cycle.

Current standing in the Men's annual points competition:
David SHIEL (Unattached) 2622 pts.
Brian CHRISTENSEN (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 2298 pts.
Gregory O'BEIRNE (Unattached) 2189 pts.

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition:
Una CHERRY (Garda Athletic Club) 2861 pts.
Jenny COLBERT (Unattached) 2725 pts.
Emer FANNING (Unattached) 2443 pts.

Some important notes:

  • We are losing 3-5 tokens on average per week. We have lost well over 100 tokens since the event started 42 weeks ago due to people not returning them. Tokens cost money. We don't get paid for parkrun, so the cost to replace these comes out of our pockets!
  • We will be enforcing the 'No barcode, no result' policy from this weekend. Previously we have accommodated runners as much as possible but adding the names manually is adding considerable workload for the volunteers.
  • We always need volunteers, please dont assume someone else will do it! Check out the roster for gaps, and sign yourself up!
  • Our first anniversary run will take place on 27th September. Put the date in your diary!

Full results and a complete event history can be found on the St Annes parkrun Results Page.

St Anne’s parkrun Event #33 24/05/14

The 24th of May 2014 marked the debut of John O'Connor as Run Director at what many consider to be the finest parkrun in the world - St. Anne's. In between chasing Harry, Niall and the 1D boyz, John and his team of well-drilled volunteers successfully oversaw a field of 200 runners as they completed the beautiful One-Directioned, tree-lined circuit. While most were happy that the rain held off, Captain John saw this as a missed opportunity, with no excuse to wear his 1D poncho, as That's What Makes Him Beautiful.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered thus far and would encourage those who haven't yet to please do so. Over recent weeks we have seen a number of new volunteers come forward, which is great to see - let's keep that trend up. Keep an eye on the roster at http://www.parkrun.ie/stannes/futureroster/ . One Direction Fan? Check when John O'Connor is next on the roster and you can tell him the Story of Your Life. Send us a facebook message or email us at stanneshelpers@parkrun.com.

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #14 – Run Report

Soggy leaves, muddy puddles and even a fallen tree blocking part of the route couldn't deter the 81 athletes (determined to start their New Year's Resolutions early!), who ran the last St Anne's parkrun of the year. The high winds and belting rain that had ravaged Dublin over the previous few days, cleared just in time to make for quite a pleasant morning.

David GRANGE (VM40-44) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first over the line with a time of 17:38 in his first appearance at St Anne's parkrun. Next came Michael MCGLOIN (SM35-39) of Piranha TC, clocking in at 17:53, and also managing a Personal Best. Peter O'TOOLE (SM30-34) of Crusaders A C Dublin, rounded up the podium positions with a time of 18:04.

Aileen HOOPER (SW30-34) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was the first woman home (18th overall) in a time of 22:08, her second time in 4 appearances. Sharon WOODS (VW40-44) of Crusaders Athletic Club, was second (26th overall) over the line in 22:57. Just after Sharon, came Mary PURDUE-SMYTH (VW45-49) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, taking the third female position (27th overall) clocking a time of 23:03.

The following runners recorded the best Age Grade scores: Alan HUGHES (VM55-59) was graded 79.90% for the time 19:14 (7th overall). David GRANGE (VM40-44) was graded 78.54% for the time 17:38 (first overall). Johnny FENNELL (VM50-54) was graded 77.16% for the time 19:16 (8th overall).

This week there were 81 runners, of whom 14 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 9 different athletics clubs took part.

As we come to the end of the year, it's interesting to have a look over the statistics since we began. St Anne's parkrun started on 28th September 2013, and since then 938 different runners, including participants from 47 athletics clubs, have completed 2,402 runs covering a total distance of 12,010 km, and there have been 635 new Personal Bests.

On the St Anne's event website, we have an Annual Points Table for both male and female. While we haven't completed a full year yet, the tables make for interesting reading. These can changes drastically throughout the year, so keep running parkrunners!

Current standing in the Men's annual points competition:
Jamie KENNY (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 1193 pts.
Brian CHRISTENSEN (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 939 pts.
Steven John ROWE (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 818 pts.

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition:
Una CHERRY (Garda Athletic Club) 991 pts.
Jenny COLBERT (Unattached) 963 pts.
Emer FANNING (Unattached) 889 pts.

Don't forget, you get 100 points when you volunteer...

Speaking of volunteers, as always, we need them. By volunteering you are contributing the sustainability of an event which is greatly valued in the community. This is YOUR event, so everyone should help out at least once. We need some help for the first run of 2014 (4th January) and of course on into the new year. You can volunteer by sending us an email to: stanneshelpers@parkrun.com or through the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/stannesparkrun/ All volunteers positions are easy, and full training will be given - it's also fun!

Thank you to this week's volunteers:

Andrew BRADLEY  •  Anne Marie FIDGEON  •  Catherine FLYNN  •  Colm KERNAN  •  Denis MURPHY  •  Gary KENNY  •  Jamie KENNY  •  Jamie PLUMMER  •  John FREIR  •  John O'CONNOR  •  Nicole ROECHERT  •  Susan HOLMGREN

Thanks for your continued support throughout the past few months, and hopefully 2014 will be a year of PBs, First Timers and great running conditions (we can hope!)

See you on the 4th January for the start of a parkrun-filled year.

Jamie Plummer, Run Director

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #13 – Run Report

102 parkrun Santas, Rudolphs and elves were whisked around the park at run #13 with some pretty high winds. What a sight it was to see!! Some were nursing hangovers, some still a little tipsy from the night before, and some anxious to do their last minute panic shopping - you know who you are...

First man home was Peter O'TOOLE (SM30-34) of Crusaders A C Dublin, with a time of 18:14. This was his first time in 4 appearances. First timer to St Anne's parkrun, but running his 125th run was Peter Justin COLLINS (VM40-44) of Hercules Wimbledon AC, was next over the line in 18:20. Another First timer to St Anne's but not to parkrun, Mark LALLY (SM30-34) (Unattached) was third over the line in 18:36. Peter Justin and Mark were visiting from Wimbledon and Dulwich parkruns respectively, so welcome to you both!

First woman over the line was Orna DILWORTH (SW25-29) (Unattached) (14th overall) in 20:38 in her first appearance. Olwyn DUNNE (VW45-49) of Crusaders Athletic Club, was second (18th overall) over the line in 21:08 in her first St Anne's parkrun. Alison O'SULLIVAN (VW35-39) of Clonliffe Harriers A.C., was third (22nd overall) over the line with a time of 21:45.

The following runners recorded the best Age Grade scores: Olwyn DUNNE (VW45-49) was graded 76.66% for the time 21:08 (18th overall). Peter Justin COLLINS (VM40-44) was graded 76.18% for the time 18:20 (second overall). Jim KEOGH (VM45-49) was graded 71.79% for the time 20:23 (11th overall).

We look forward to seeing you - same time, same place on the 28th December for our final run of 2013.

As always, we need volunteers. By volunteering you are contributing the sustainability of an event which is greatly valued in the community. We have a full roster for this coming Saturday (28th), but we need some help for the first run of 2014 (4th January) and of course on into the new year. You can volunteer by sending us an email to: stanneshelpers@parkrun.com or through the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/stannesparkrun/ All volunteers positions are easy, and full training will be given - it's also fun!

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #10 – Run Report

And so, we are into double figures! Jamie Plummer took the reins as RD once more for St Anne's parkrun #10. This week there were 182 runners present, of whom 40 were first timers (Welcome!) with the unseasonably friendly weather helping 79 athletes to record new Personal Bests. We also saw a couple of parkrun veterans join us - Laura Bowden (parkrun #126 for her) and John Carlin (#81 for him). We hope you enjoyed St Annes, and we welcome your return any time!

Paul MCKENNA (SM25-29) (Unattached) was once again first over the line in 17:14 - his second time in 5 appearances. Aidan JONES (SM25-29) (Unattached) was second over the line in 17:26 - his second time topping the pile. Peter O'TOOLE (SM30-34) of Crusaders A C Dublin, rounded off the podium positions with a time of 18:02.

Emer MAGEE (VW45-49) (Unattached) was first lady (20th overall) over the line in 20:06 in her first appearance here at St Annes. Emer's superb result puts her 7th overall (2nd lady) on the Age Graded League Performance chart (81.43%) for St Annes parkrun. http://www.parkrun.ie/stannes/results/agegradedleague/ . Alex HORGAN (SW20-24) (Unattached) was second lady (29th overall) over the line in 21:03. Edel MCNAMARA (VW35-39) (Unattached) was third lady (36th overall) over the line in 21:45.

Today's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Stannes parkrun Results Page. Nici Roechert took some great photos - you can find them through our facebook page.

On a more serious note, we urge all runners not to over-exert themselves at parkrun! Even if you are a marathon veteran, running 5km is a strenuous pursuit - don't push yourself too hard. We'd like to thank everyone who assisted the runner in difficulty on Saturday last - he recovered just fine. If you were the nurse that helped out, can you please contact us directly - sorry, we did not catch your name.

Once again, I am making a call for more people to volunteer! Helpers are crucial to the event, without them, the run would not go ahead. Why not join us for a future event? There are plenty of jobs to do, full training will be given. There are sometimes jobs you can do, and also run, so it's worth getting in touch. You can volunteer by sending us an email to: stanneshelpers@parkrun.com or through the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/stannesparkrun/

Volunteers last Saturday were as follows:

Anne MC COMISH  •  Brendan O'CONNELL  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Jamie PLUMMER  •  Jenny COLBERT  •  Jim EDGHILL  •  John O'TOOLE  •  Liz CONROY  •  Nicole ROECHERT  •  Tony FAGAN

See you next Saturday!

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #8 – Run Report

The original, and some may argue, the best Jamie regained control and his composure (!) as the Run Director for St Anne's parkrun #8, which was held last Saturday the 16th November. The unseasonably mild and dry weather thankfully held true for another week, as 215 (a record number, second only to our inaugural run) runners and walkers started the day the best way...with a 5km run around the scenic St Anne's park.

In the men's category, it was a day for the "young fellas"! Aidan JONES (SM25-29) (Unattached) was first over the line with a PB of 17:27. This was his first time to cross the line first in 3 appearances. Another young buck, Paul MCKENNA (SM25-29) (Unattached) was second over the line with a time of 17:37. Patrick CONNOLLY (SM25-29) (Unattached) came next, in his first appearance at St Anne's parkrun, as third over the line in 17:49.

Sisters were doing it for themselves (!), with Sharon WOODS (VW40-44) of Crusaders Athletic Club, first over the line with a PB of 22:45. This was also her first time to cross the line first in 3 appearances. Jenny COLBERT (VW40-44) (Unattached) was second over the line with a time of 23:06. Eimear DREA (SW30-34) (Unattached) was third over the line in 23:30 in her first appearance.

This week there were 215 runners, of whom 69 were first timers and 91 people recorded new Personal Bests, (including this Run Director!).

The event's full results can be found here: http://www.parkrun.ie/stannes/results/latestresults/

As Jamie K mentioned last week, everyone who turns up and participates in parkrun deserves recognition and acknowledgement. Whether it's a PB you're striving for, trying to catch up with that person in front of you, or you just want to enjoy a nice leisurely run, parkrun is really a great way to start your Saturday. And even if you feel you're one of the slower ones, just remember, you are lapping everyone who is at home, sitting on the couch!

Again, our volunteers are crucial to the event. Why not join us in a future event? We're nice, I promise! There are plenty of jobs to do, full training will be given. You can volunteer by sending us an email to: stanneshelpers@parkrun.com or through the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/stannesparkrun/

Our lovely volunteer team this week was as follows:

Jamie KILLEEN  • Brian CHRISTENSEN  •  Catherine KILLEEN  •  Colm KERNAN  •   Jim EDGHILL  •  Mark MCCOMISH  •  Martin MCKENNA  •  Michelle FARRELL  •  Nicole ROECHERT  •  Peter O'TOOLE  •  Susan MURPHY (Thanks guys!)

See you on Saturday!

Jamie Plummer - Run Director (23/11 & 30/11)

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #6 – Run Report

Once again, our sway over the weather gods proved critical in ensuring our runners stayed dry this Saturday. Long may our superpowers last! Our 6th event at St Annes drew 187 runners, some dusting off their boots after slogging through 26.2 Dublin City Marathon miles last Monday. This week saw Brian Christensen make his debut in the Run Director chair. Like a duck to water, Brian took to the role naturally and will be back in the hotseat for the event on 9th November and more in the future.

This week, the runners were led home by Martin MCKENNA (unattached) in 17:57, followed by Aidan JONES  (SM25-29) (Unattached) in 18:18, with John MCAULEY (Crusaders) rounding out the top three in a time of 18:26. The ladies were led home once again by Aoife BRADY of Sportsworld, in 19:51 - this was her third time as fastest finisher in her 3 appearances here at St Annes. Aileen HOOPER of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was second lady over the line in 22:23, and Jenny COLBERT (Unattached) in 23:06.

With 6 runs now under our belt at St Annes, it is time to have a look at the current overall standings in the annual points competitions. The ladies are leading the way here guys.... time to rally!

Eilis O BROIN (Unattached) 522 pts.
Jenny COLBERT (Unattached) 478 pts.
Emer FANNING (Unattached) 440 pts.

Brian CHRISTENSEN (Unattached) 485 pts.
Michael GYGAX (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 467 pts.
Jamie KENNY (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 454 pts.

Well done to all participants, and a special thanks to all of our volunteers. The volunteer roles are all easy-to-do tasks, and by helping out, you are ensuring that the run continues to go ahead on a weekly basis and continues to be a success! We need to keep building the roster of volunteers so that the same people aren't doing it week in, week out! Email stanneshelpers@parkrun.com to help.

We put some pictures on line that we take most weeks, but these are just casually taken on our phones. If you are a budding or expert photographer, we'd love to have you down to take some snaps, you'll get volunteer points and most importantly an enormous sense of well-being!

Our volunteer team this week was as follows:

Brian CHRISTENSEN  •  Colm KERNAN  •  Gemma KILLEEN  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Joan Mary HARRIS  •  Mark MCCOMISH  •  Mary PATTERSON  •  Peter O'TOOLE  •  Siobhan HOGAN  •  Susan HOLMGREN

We still see a lot of runners forgetting their barcodes, meaning they get an 'Unknown' time. Don't forget that barcode to record your PB!

This week there were 187 runners, of whom 62 were first timers and 29 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 8 different athletics clubs took part.

Stannes parkrun started on 28th September 2013, and since then 606 different runners, including participants from 30 athletics clubs, have completed 1,165 runs covering a total distance of 5,825 km, and there have been 223 new Personal Bests.

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #4 – Run Report

Thankfully the torrential rain we had on Friday didn't follow through into Saturday morning, meaning the runners for St. Anne's parkrun #4 could leave their snorkels and swimming gear on hold for a future opportunity. With Dublin City Marathon just over a week away, it was great to see a 187-strong crowd converge on St. Anne's for the run.

The runners were led home by Eoin CALLAGHAN of Star of the Sea in a course record time of 15:45. Eoin was followed home by Gerard MARTIN (Unattached) in 17:10 and Oliver HART of Totley AC in 17:28. The ladies were led home by Louise DOBBYN of Crusaders Athletic Club in 19:56, followed by club-mate Anna KING in 20:12 and Ciara RYAN (Unattached) in 22:18.

Well done to all runners, of all speeds. Remember, it is you against the clock, and you can plot your progress over your previous runs (both in St. Anne's and elsewhere), by looking up your results on the St. Anne's parkrun website search function.

It was heartening to see a reduction in the amount of 'borrowed' tokens this week. 2 tokens went missing, but one was returned to us in the cafe afterwards - thanks again Catherine!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered for us thus far. With 4 runs under our belt, we're starting to get into the groove of things and that's attributable to everyone pulling together and getting into the spirit of it. We're always looking for more volunteers so that we're not relying on the same people all the time - send us an email at stanneshelpers@parkrun.com , contact us on facebook, or come and see the Event team onsite before or after the run. When looking to volunteer, it needn't necessarily be for the week after, it can be for a future date if you'd prefer.

Thanks to all of this week's volunteers, with a special mention to Eoin Fegan. Many of our runners will know Eoin from Malahide parkrun, where he is a key part of the core team (that's what he tells us anyhow). Eoin committed to helping us get off the ground at St. Anne's, and it gave all of us great comfort knowing we had his knowledge and experience on hand to help us out in the early weeks. Unfortunately, those Malahide parkrun guys played hardball, and wouldn't let Eoin make the move on a permanent basis! On a serious note, thanks Eoin, and hopefully see you back soon.

Our other legends of the park this week were:

Brian CHRISTENSEN  •  Cathal GAHAN  •  Eoin FEGAN  •  Gemma KILLEEN  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Mark MCCOMISH  •  Pat HOOPER  •  Siobhan HOGAN  •  Vikki BARRETT

St. Anne's parkrun started on 28th September 2013, and since then 475 different runners, including participants from 27 athletics clubs, have completed 798 runs covering a total distance of 3,990 km, and there have been 133 new Personal Bests.

St Anne’s parkrun – Event #3 – Run Report

186 runners participated in St. Anne's event #3 held yesterday, 12th October. The cooler weather and patchy drizzle at the start did little to dampen the spirits of this bunch of Saturday morning sportsters. As usual, following the safety briefing, the runners were off shortly after 9:30am on the fast, flat PB-encouraging course.

Kieran MARTIN (SM30-34) of Crusaders Athletic Club, was first over the line in 17:08. He was followed by Mark MURPHY (SM25-29) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, in 17:12 closely followed by Gerard MARTIN (SM30-34) (Unattached) in 17:13.

First lady home for the second week running was Aoife BRADY (SW30-34)  of Sportsworld, in 19:00. Aoife was followed by Marie BYRNE (VW35-39) of Clonliffe Harriers A.C., in 20:05 and Helen CARR (VW35-39) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, in 21:03.

Once again, we would like to remind runners not to take the finishing tokens home with them - please bring them along with your athlete barcode to get scanned after you have finished. These tokens are not for keeps!

Finally, we would like to thank all this week's volunteers, some of which were first timers, all doing a superb job to ensure the event ran smoothly -

Anita BANSAL  •  Amit BANSAL  •  Andrew BRADLEY  •  Antonia MARTIN  •  Brian MURTAGH  •  Catherine KILLEEN  •  Denis MURPHY  •  Eoin FEGAN  •  Jamie KILLEEN  •  Jamie PLUMMER  •  Susan HOLMGREN

Run Report – St Annes parkrun Event #1, 28/9/2013

A beautiful morning greeted the runners for the first St Annes parkrun, in Raheny, Dublin 5. Runners started arriving shortly after 9am, in eager anticipation of the new event. Following a few thank yous, course guide and safety briefing from the Run Director, the runners (all 233 of them) were on their way at 9:30am.

Less than 16 minutes after the siren sounded to see the runners off, the first person was finished - Raheny Shamrocks' Mick Traynor in a time of 15:49, setting a challenging bar, which others will no doubt try to better in the coming weeks. Mick also set the age-graded record (91.78%) for Irish parkruns. Mick was followed by Michael Kiely of Crusaders in 16:08 and Kieron Peters of Star of the Sea in 16:19.

Raheny Shamrocks' Aoife Talty was first over the line in the Women's Category (and was 5th overall), setting a new parkrun Ireland record of 16:51. Aoife was followed by Hannah Oldroyd (Airedale Dodgers) and Carly Derraven in 18:14 and 21:51 respectively.

Great conditions for running, and a number of satisfied faces seen refueling at the adjacent cafe afterwards. Well done to all participants - great performances all-round, we look forward to seeing you again as you seek to challenge yourself to beat your PB!

Finally, we would like to thank all this week's volunteers -

Brian CHRISTENSEN  •  Catherine KILLEEN  •  David COSTIGAN  •  Eoin FEGAN  •  Gareth BYRNE  •  Gemma KILLEEN  •  Gillian TARRANT  •  Jamie PLUMMER  •  Kevin BOYLE  •  Pat HOOPER  •  Peter VEALE   •  Niamh MULHERIN

We need a couple of extras for the coming weeks - please contact us at stanneshelpers@parkrun.com to put your name down!
