St. Anne’s parkrun – Run Report Event #160 – 10/12/2016

Saturday, 10th of December saw the 160th staging of St. Anne’s parkrun. My day started with a bang when I arrived down to the park to set up the finish funnel only to notice that I had a rear tyre puncture. Thoughts of spending my post-parkrun time attempting to remedy same were thankfully banished by two able volunteers – Dylan Evenden and Simon Diab, who stepped up to save the day for me and allow me to get on with what I do best… run direct.

As usual, big thanks to all the volunteers, without whom we would not be able to stage such a magnificent event.

We had 202 participants on the day, with Niamh Donnellan running her 50th event - well done Niamh!

As we start to bring 2016 to a close, we look forward to a bumper parkrun program over the festive period:

  • Christmas Eve parkrun, 9:30 am, Saturday 24th December
  • New Year’s Eve parkrun, 9:30 am, Saturday 31st December
  • New Year’s Day parkrun (St. Anne’s), 9:30 am, Sunday 1st January
  • New Year’s Day parkrun #2 (Fr. Collins – c.5km away from St. Anne’s), 11am, Sunday 1st January

New Year’s Day is the only day where (a) you can run and get credit for two parkruns and (b) we have a degree of control over what time we stage the runs at – thereby facilitating two runs. Why not do the double? Or the triple, including NY Eve?

All events will go ahead subject to safe conditions and sufficient volunteers – please help out if you can – keep an eye on our facebook page for further details and announcements. Note we have no vehicular access to the park on those days so direction arrows and other infrastructure etc. are likely to be kept to a minimum.

Finally, it gives me great pleasure to pass on the news that St. Anne’s junior parkrun (2km, 4-14 year olds) will be starting on Sunday, 5th February, 2017 at 9:30am. Follow St. Anne’s junior parkrun on facebook for further information.

St Anne’s parkrun Event number 152 15th October 2016

On what can only be described as a horrendous morning in the pi**ing of rain in St Annes we still had a very commendable 187 runners who turned to take on our course. Of course it was a lovely day by the time coffee was over.

It was a very cosmopolitan group with a number of first time parkrunners as well as a number of people running in St. Annes for the first time and the Evening Herald were there to capture the event on camera as part of their ongoing parkrun tour.

We offered a warm (in the cold) welcome to Andrea and Theresa who visited us from Leigh on Sea Striders in Southend and also to visitors from Maitland, Australia.

We could not forget our own Gillian Kenny's birthday and also Eva O'Beirne who was one of our many volunteers, to whom our full appreciation goes out every week.

All was going so well until we realised that there were no tokens, (holding up hand as guilty) so we went with plan B which involved the forming of lines with everyone prompting the scanners with their position number. I want to thank all those who jumped into action to help out here. It was the first time ever that we had a 42 way tie for 1st finisher. I would like to thank you all for your patience and understanding and as some parkrunners have commented, it kept everyone in the same place chatting so I hope that everyone met someone new and it can be claimed as a mini success. Hopefully everyone who ran has got their result at this stage, if not let me know.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, we have asked if the water can be turned off for the morning with the heat turned up a little.

Richie

St. Annes parkrunner of the month – Congratulations Denis Murphy

Name: Denis Murphy

Club: Crusaders A.C.

Age: 55

Home parkrun: St. Anne's.   Also involved with Albert College junior parkrun.

Occupation: Oldest student in town!

Number of Runs: 53

Favourite Volunteer Role: I enjoy them all but timekeeper is probably my favourite - it's great to have a close-up view of all the finishers.

How did you find time to write a thesis in addition to being awesome?: I couldn't have done it without a lot of support and encouragement. Being a marathon runner helped too, long runs are great for thinking about work and life in general.

Favourite flavour of Pringle: Original, BBQ or Anna? Ha ha! There's only one Anna Pringle. She can be a bit salty though.

What do you do at parkruns?: If I'm marathon training I often do the parkrun at marathon pace or slightly faster, or slower as part of a longer run. On the odd occasion that I go for a PB, there is usually someone at St. Anne's willing to help out with some pacing, especially on the last Saturday of the month. Helps to push through the pain!

How has parkrun changed your running?: It has made me much more appreciative of the people behind the scenes at every event

What do you like about parkrun?: The sociability is fantastic. Have made quite a few good friends through parkrun. It's also brilliant to see the joy on the faces of the junior parkrunners. Doing parkrun tourism is fun too - always friendly and a good way of meeting like-minded people in far-flung suburbs and towns.

Most memorable or funniest parkrun moment?: Getting lost in the woods on the way to the first ever Irish parkrun in Malahide. Plus I'd forgotten my barcode. Learned my lesson that day!

Another thanks goes to those who came up on the morning to ask if they could help out, as we were a little stuck for volunteers. So if you want to help out but also run, there are certain roles which allow you to do that. Get in touch with us through facebook or via email stanneshelpers@parkrun.com

St. Anne’s parkrun #115 – Run Report

5 days later and I think the excitement of last week has finally started to subside.

We had an amazing morning with a little bit of coldness but that was soon forgotten when we got down to business. 468 people turned up from first timers to people with over 100 parkruns, walkers to sprinters. That is the magic of parkrun is that everyone is equal, you challenge yourself and see how you fare.

It was a magnificent turnout out due to Operation Transformation, the Lord Mayor and the 5 Alive crew and our regular runners, Raheny Community First Responders and Raheny GAA. Noticed that the GAA crew were a little worried about 6 in the evening as to how long more one of their crew would be before they finished.

Then there was the volunteers, the magnificent volunteers who make it look like everything is a piece of cake, which it is as long as we have volunteers. And speaking of cake we also had Olives café afterwards.

To top it all off the post about the run reached over 7500 people so we are officially famous.

Obviously the reference in the briefing to "heroes just for one day" was a reference to David Bowie, and the "I will count to 3, there will not be a 4" was Alan Rickman as "Hans Gruber" in Die Hard, we had some movie nerds (like me) who got this.

Now here is the science bit, the stats from last week are

Male placings:
Damien MARTIN (VM50-54) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first over the line in 17:26 - 4th time in 8 appearances.

Conall MURPHY (SM30-34) of Piranha TC, was third over the line in 17:38.

Current standing in the Men's annual points competition:
Alan O' FLYNN (Raheny Shamrocks AC) 1286 pts.

Keith FLEMING (Unattached) 1142 pts.

Female placings:
Lucy BARRETT (JW15-17) of Raheny Shamrocks AC, was first (22nd overall) over the line in 19:59 - 4th time in 4 appearances.

Caitriona COSTELLO (VW40-44) (Unattached) was third (63rd overall) over the line in 21:53 - was first to finish once before.

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition:
Una CHERRY (Garda Athletic Club) 1367 pts.
Caitriona COSTELLO (Unattached) 1271 pts.
Mary LYNCH (Unattached) 1177 pts.

The following runners recorded the best Age Grade scores:
Damien MARTIN (VM50-54) was graded 84.61% for the time 17:26 (first overall).
Martin KELLY (VM50-54) was graded 78.73% for the time 19:12 (12th overall).
Jean DUNNE (VW55-59) was graded 77.46% for the time 23:22 (105th overall).

This week there were 468 runners, of whom 118 were first timers and 40 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different athletics clubs took part.

St Annes parkrun started on 28th September 2013, and since then 5,201 different runners, including participants from 170 athletics clubs, have completed 26,595 runs covering a total distance of 132,975 km, and there have been 5,640 new Personal Bests.

The female record is held by Aoife TALTY who ran in a time of 00:16:51 on 2013-09-28 (event number 1).

St. Anne’s parkrun Run Report #85 – 13th June 2015

Hi Everyone,

A glorious morning greeted our 250 parkrun warriors and 20 volunteer heroes for our 85th event. Was great to see so many of you answering the call to deck yourselves out in the green and tri-colours in support of Ireland...shame about the result though grrrr.

Special mention also (even though he wasn't there) to Rob Clarke who was St. Annes parkrunner of the month for March but was recently upgraded to be parkrunner of the month for Ireland. Congratulations Rob.

Anyway the pack was lead home by Dermot Gorman of Raheny Shamrocks, but he had Brian Purcell hot on his heels!!

our first lady of the day was Aine Crimin also of Raheny Shamrocks...I'm starting to spot a trend here :-)

Our coveted and much sought after 98th place was claimed by first timer Eavan Connolly. Congratulations to you all.

Like every other event, this one could NOT....NOT happen without our hard working and dedicated volunteers who made everything run perfectly. This weeks hereos were:
Allan O'Brien, Anne Mc Comish, Caitriona Rooney, Ciara Malone, Connor Jennings, Deirdre O'Dwyer, Gillian Kenny, Helen O'Shaughnessy, John O'Connor, Nicola Mooney, Peter Daniel, Robbie Beggs, Scott Love, Stella Kuit, Susan Moloney, Tara Sweetman, Tommy Crampton, Una Cherry, Úna Ní Chribín and Valerie Hand.

Hi all,

We had a great field of 266 runners, who braved the cold and windy day to make this weekend's parkrun.
We also had a great team of volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly.
