Run Report #366 09/09/2023

A little late with the report this week and while this is somewhat weather related it is also run related with the Ray Flynn Memorial 5K happening yesterday evening and today was just too good not to get out and about.

Yesterday we had 104 people run, walk or jog another enjoyable and successful parkrun, including visitors from USA, Australia, Fermanagh and Clare. All made possible by our team of 16 hiviz heros.  May be an image of 8 people and text

There was one new milestone reached with Aine Dubose joining the 25 club and we had one birthday celebration that the birthday boy was trying to keep quiet but was announced by his friends during the briefing.

Speaking of hiviz heros our new volunteer board is working wonders with next week's roster already three quarter full and quite a few people putting their names forward for coming weeks. A big thank you to the people behind this idea.

Plans for a junior parkrun are moving along at a fair pace with the formation of a core team the next priority, Anyone interested contact us through our Facebook page and we will pass your detail on to the people behind the junior parkrun idea, also you can mail details to jim.rushe@parkrun.com or christopher.davey@parkrun.com.

Yesterday we had two of our future juniors helping out with set up and token sorting so the core team will have two experienced volunteers when they get started.

Until next week let's hope the weather keeps up and we can continue to enjoy the late summer.

Run Report Sligo Parkrun #365: 02 Sept 2023

In an effort not to break away from tradition, thanks to Liam for pointing it out last week, I better start the run report by making reference to the weather! We were very fortunate to get a dry, slightly humid morning, where 125 participants ran, jogged and walked the course. To be fair the last few Saturdays have turned out really wet but we have been fortunate enough to get home fairly dry before the weather turned nasty.

I would like to thank all our volunteers who gave up their morning to make sure that parkrun could go ahead. I was delighted to start this week with a full volunteer roster by Monday evening. As any run director will confirm, there is nothing better than having a full roster early in the week!

Three of our volunteers today were volunteering for their very first time. I hope ye enjoyed your experience and will be back volunteering with us very soon. I also have to give a big shout out to our junior volunteers who were giving high fives to our runners enroute and who also helped me with the post event tidy up and finish token sorting………………think we may have some new run directors in the making.

Volunteers

Every parkrun relies on volunteers so if you have never volunteered before or haven’t volunteered in a while, please reach out to us on email sligo@parkrun.com or Facebook messenger with dates/roles you would like to volunteer on. Please see future roster for the current volunteer roster. Positions are filling up for the next few weeks, so don’t delay! For anyone aiming towards a volunteer milestone, there are only 17 opportunities to volunteer between now and Christmas. Who’s planning to get their volunteer t-shirt for Christmas?

Sligo Parkrun was well presented around the country today. Core team member Liam and son Joe was down in Cork doing some parkrun tourism at Mallow Castle parkrun. I believe both father and son came first in their age categories. Liam has yet to confirm if he was the only person in his age category!! Either way, we are delighted for ye both. Hope ye got to celebrate your first place finish.

Liam

Mallie was also down in Cork doing some parkrun tourism at Tramore Valley Parkrun.

Mallie

Some of our regular park runners took part in the Swinford ¾ marathon today. Next stop will be the Dublin City Marathon. Well done today and best of luck in the upcoming marathon.

Swinford

Everyone was very quiet this morning when I asked if anyone was celebrating any milestones today. We actually had three people celebrating this morning. Liam Garrett and Marie Burns celebrated their 25th milestone and junior park runner Ellen Carty celebrated her 10th milestone. Hope to see you all in your milestone t shirts very soon.

Congratulations to those who just started their parkrun journey – another 18 people did their first ever parkrun at Sligo today. Hope you are all enjoying the sense of achievement and will come back to us again soon.

Nineteen people are also celebrating new PB’s today! What an achievement and well done to all.

We had 8 visitors completing Sligo parkrun for the first time. They were from Paris, Leitrim and Marley Park (Hope I haven’t left any of you out). I hope you enjoyed your visit to Sligo and that it won’t be your last time with us.

Plans to set up a junior parkrun in Sligo are progressing nicely. Junior parkrun will be held every Sunday morning at the usual 9.30am start. If anyone is interested, please get in touch with Sally Donnelly or message us through our Facebook page.

A regular park runner of ours has setup a men's community group built around cold water sea dips and a nice cuppa afterwards. Weekly men's group meetup is 6.30pm at Deadmans Point Rosses Point. Follow https://www.instagram.com/blueballssligo/ for details.

We will do it all over again next week, same time, same place at the usual 9.30am start.

Run Report Sligo parkrun #363 26/08/2023

During the week when I was contemplating this weeks run report it occurred to me that the Sligo parkrun report appears to always mention the weather , so in order to justify my opinion I checked back on our previous run reports and am happy to confirm that  we have consistently commented on the weather conditions for the past 16 weeks , all the way back to May 6th . In our defence the run report of May 6th was written by Conn a parkrun tourist all the way from Derry !! hence did not include the weather conditions please accept our apologies for this oversight !!!!!!

Now that we have established that ,and not wishing to buck the trend regarding weather reports  as myself and Joe put out the course markers this morning the heavens opened , wet weather gear was donned and I had some choice words for the weather gods !!

The communication channel appears to have been in operation as we returned to the start line we were greeted with a  rainbow and lovely dry conditions that continued for the duration of todays parkrun and I am sure the 13 people with shiny new PBs were happy with that the weather gods were listening !!

Amongst our 78 park runners this morning we had visitors from Tipperary , Derry , Dublin  ,Omagh ,Wicklow , Inishmaan and Dulwich  in the UK , I may have missed a few more locations !! I hope everyone  had a great morning and will return to us again soon and do  spread the word when ye get home what a friendly bunch we are .

One of the most important PB achieved this week at Sligo parkrun was that we had a full roster by Sunday night !!!! A Huge , Huge thank you to all those that volunteered and made life so much easier for this fledgling Run Director.

When we say that we couldn’t do it without you, it is absolutely true. Without volunteers, there would be no parkrun .

Todays Heroes , next week it could be you !!

Todays Heroes , next week it could be you !!

We are delighted that our fancy new volunteer whiteboard  is starting to get plenty of use and we encourage people to sign up a week or two ahead if possible; there is nothing like a full roster to fill a Run Director with joy and avoid that dreaded Run Director illness Volunteer Anxiety Syndrome !!

Our roster is looking a little bit empty  for the next few weeks so  if you haven't volunteered before or for some time please consider volunteering over the coming weeks we will make you most welcome . If you are in a position to volunteer email us at sligo@parkrun.com or drop us a message to our Facebook page .

Interested in volunteering regularly? You can sign up to receive volunteering emails in your parkrun profile.

Many of our regular parkrun participants took on a slightly more challenging route this afternoon and completed the Warriors Run what a fantastic brilliantly organised event in  Sligo congratulations to everyone who participated ,  I am sure we will see ye  all next Saturday proudly wearing your brand new Warriors Run T Shirts .

Event Director in the morning Warrior in the afternoon Congratulations Jim

Run Report #363 19/08/23

The residue of Storm Betty abated just in time for today’s Sligo Parkrun. While it was still wet underfoot, there was no rain during the parkrun and running/walking conditions were good.

Welcome to our many visitors (both first time and returning) who joined us from Westport, Swansea, Laois, Dublin, Cabinteely, Tralee, London, Wexford, Belfast, Derry, Lough Key, Porterstown and Cork (and apologies if anyone got missed!). A few of our own Sligo regulars were on tour too – James was in Cologne while Colin volunteered in Wolverhampton.

A particular welcome to young Sadhbh from Derry who proudly wore her parkun milestone t-shirt; she has an impressive 101 junior parkruns and 17 regular parkruns to her name! Fantastic as always to see the great support from our locals – especially on a day when the sound of rain at getting up time made it VERY tempting to skip parkrun. And thanks to the weather gods who banished the rain as our reward. Major congratulations to the 3 people who did their first ever parkrun today – we hope you enjoyed it and that you’ll do it again.

Also delighted to see Leitrim running legend PJ Leddy supporting his son Seamus today. PJ had an impressive running career in the 1960s and 1970s, including a sports scholarship to the US. He tells me that his favourite event was the cross country 12km and he competed in the World Cross-Country Championship in 1968 and 1969. A little bit of research shows his PB for 5,000m is 14:20; many of us parkrunners would be happy to complete in twice that time! Lovely to meet you PJ :).

Well done to Brian Kinsella – he ran his milestone 100th parkrun today and celebrated that by taking first place too! We also had two 25th parkrun milestones – congratulations to local Ultan Smith and to regular visitor Gerard McMahon. Daniel Gallagher took second place today (with a new PB – well done Daniel!) while Ted Burke from Cabinteely came 3rd. Well done to young Sarah Mulvaney-Kelly; the first female home; she showed a clean part of heels to the adults and set a new PB into the bargain. She was followed  by first timer to Sligo, Yvonne McDermott Rees from Swansea while local Aisling Burke took 3rd.

Fantastic to see some great runners but parkRUN (don’t be fooled by the name) is for everyone of all abilities. Everyone is welcome to WALK, STROLL or JOG at their own speed – we will never rush you and there is a tailwalker to make sure that you aren’t the last! You can bring your dog (on a short non-extendable lead), push a buggy, or be guided by a VI guide (email in advance and we’ll check if one of our trained VI guides is available). If you have any queries about the course or concerns as to the difficulty level, please do contact us in advance at sligo@parkrun.com or by facebook message.

Thanks as always to our fantastic team of volunteers – when we say that we couldn’t do it without you, it is absolutely true. Without volunteers, there would be no marshals, no course signs or course check, no timekeepers, no barcode scanners, no finish tokens, no tailwalkers, no first timers briefing, no VI guides, no parkwalkers, no freshly washed hi-vis – not to mention the photos, cheering and craic that goes along with it all. As our lovely new volunteer white board (thanks Regina!) tells us “Your Parkrun Needs You” and we encourage people to sign up a week or two ahead if possible; there is nothing like a full roster to fill a Run Director with joy :).

And speaking of all the things that the volunteers do, there is a lot of paraphernalia needed – which is generously stored by Westeroast coffee shop every week. So you can keep the good karma in circulation by volunteering when you can (once every 6 to 8 parkruns would be perfect) and refuelling across the road in Westeroast afterwards. They had a particularly lovely millionaire shortbread today; along with the coffee, it was just the thing needed to figure out a few glitches when processing the results!

Hope that you all enjoyed today’s parkrun and that we’ll see you again soon. Remember if you can volunteer over the next few weeks, just drop an email to sligo@parkrun.com or send a message on our facebook page. Have a good week and good luck to all taking on the challenge of the Warrior’s Run next Saturday afternoon!

Big celebration this morning for unique volunteer Blathnaid who reached the 100 volunteer milestone mark without ever having run or walked a single parkrun. Always in good humour Blathnaid has entertained the volunteer team in the start finish area over the past number of years and helps cheer up the whole gang on even the bleakest winter mornings, Her special contribution each week is her prediction at the start as to how many participants we have always plus or minus 3 of course. However she has been slipping somewhat in this area in recent times. Some comments received from runners and walkers this morning:

Super congratulations..you make me smile every time I see your infectious smile and happy happy bike. . True spirit of Parkrun !

Yahoo, the world needs more people like you to make it a better place. Well done

Well done Blathnaid McGauran - it almost wouldn't feel like Sligo parkrun without you!

Plans are progressing with the idea of starting a junior sligo parkrun for 4 to 14 year olds in the near future anyone interested in becoming involved email Sligo@parkrun.com or message us on Facebook and we will pass you details on to the relevant people. In the meantime our neighbours at Lough Key start their junior parkrun tomorrow Sunday at 09:30 same venue a their Saturday parkun and continuing every Sunday at the usual 09:30 start time. So if you would like to sample junior parkrun why not pay them a visit.
As always a big thank you to our volunteers and reminding you to check your diary to see if it's time for you to volunteer again.
