Run Report, Event 55

Oranmore parkrun #55 - August 26, 2017

We all love parkrun for its simplicity. There are only a few rules. Don't forget your barcode, dogs on a short lead, and a few more. And there are a few unwritten rules too. First, you can never admit another parkrun is "better" than your "home" parkrun, and second, there's no such thing as a "perfect parkrun". Well, this morning in Oranmore I found a real beauty, coming close to breaking both of those unwritten rules!

IMG_4543We got there early, and parked in the lower car park by the water's edge, our first treat of many this morning with spectacular views of the lovely harbour.

maureen mark
At 9:00, I met Maureen Devaney, Event Director and today's Run Director, setting up the new flag at the start. Maureen is a real parkrun veteran, having helped establish Galway's first parkrun on the other side of the city, she now has a real gem in Orannore. A few minutes later, along came her side-kick Mark McCormick, also positively brimming with enthusiasm for parkrun. Mark is not only regular Run Director and core team stalwart for the Saturday parkrun, but since last week also Event Director for Ireland's latest junior parkrun which was such a huge hit for its inaugural run. Such is his energy, you'd imagine that he'd do it every other day of the week too, if his real job didn't get in the way!

Mark was running today, but that didn't stop him joining the team or volunteers, delivering the New Runners' Briefing which Maureen addressed the regulars. As well as a number of first-timers, Mark welcomed visitors all the way from Tralee (myself and Maeve), Molly and James Millington from London, Anwar Memon from Milan and even tourists who came all the way from Athenry! (Milano Nord must be a tough course, Anwar's time today was his parkrun PB, over a minute faster than his home PB. Maybe the weather is a factor!)

IMG_4567
Marshals Ellie Dickens and Sinead O'Hagan, and tail walker Sharon Daly.

At 9:30 on the dot, we were off. What a fantastic route. Perfect surface, lovely scenery, a mixture of park and forest. A few hills thrown in for the real runners. As it's two laps rather than the three I'm used to, I wasn't lapped by anyone this week for a change. But the lovely figure-of-eight circuit means that not only did we get to see the other runners a couple of times, we also met the marshals/cheerleaders four times, but they steadfastly refused to allow a short cut even for a visitor!

As I was well towards the back of the pack, I obviously don't have any photos of the first finishers - most of them were long gone when I struggled up that last hill behind Niamh and Padraig, who kept me entertained and motivated for the 5k.

After 32 runs, Barry Maguire crossed the line first today for his first time, 19:49 was pretty close to his PB! He was followed by Alan Dempsey and the afore-mentioned Mark McCormick. Aine O'Farrell had a great run and was the first lady home (and third overall) in a time of 20:20 - her ninth time being the first lady to finish. She was also fastest junior, although Tom Griffin wasn't far behind with his Top-10 finish.

Lots of PBs today too, for Helen Kelly, Mary McCormack, Elisabete Aguas, Ann Hughes, Elaine Joyce, Patricia McCarthy, John Forde, John Sheehan, PJ Tarpey, Alan Bailey and Mark Finlay. And a special mention for James Cawley who had not only his fifth consecutive PB, but has now had eight PBs in just 13 runs, and has seen his time improve from just under 30 minutes to his first sub-24 today!

You can check out the full results here.

poppy seed
After the run, we had a chance to chat with Maureen, Mark and tail-walker Sharon in the nearby Poppy Seed Cafe - the food is delicious! It's a lovely way to finish a parkrun morning, having a coffee and a chat wth fellow parkrun enthusiasts.

IMG_4552
Timekeepers Jonathan Cormican and Fergus Kelly, waiting at the top of that final hill!
By the way, Maureen and Mark, there is one more unwritten rule, nay, commandment, that you are breaking! "Thou shalt not have an uphill finish at a parkrun!" (OK, maybe that only applies to the strugglers/stragglers like me!).

Of course having glorious sunny weather helps, but there's no doubt that Oranmore parkrun is something very special. We all know how parkrunners are always friendly and welcoming, none more so than the team at Oranmore, thanks for a lovely morning and we look forward to returning the hospitality when you visit us in Tralee!

Run Report, Our first Birthday – Event #53

Event #53
5th August 2017
Event Photos: [Click here]

Can you believe we are one year old? Time flies when your having fun they say! To mark our first birthday in style we had lots of freshly baked treats as well as teas and coffees (literally three tables full!).

A massive thank-you to all our bakers, which included runners, volunteers and friends of volunteers. I was starting to worry if we would manage to get through all the food but thankfully you were all a hungry bunch today :)

We were so lucky with the weather, heavy rainfall in the hours before parkrun, dry sunshine throughout and more heavy rain after the event was finished!

Now, some yearly stats for Oranmore parkrun:

  • 53 Events
  • 2027 registrations
  • 1626 individuals completed a run
  • 6782 runs completed
  • 33,910 km run in total by all of you!
  • 655 volunteer roles filled
  • 208 people volunteered

And amongst all the eating, we did actually have a 5km run today :)

Heres to another successful year at Oranmore parkrun!

Numbers were slightly down this week, but for a great cause! Oranmore hosted it's first Darkness into Light walk/run in the early hours prior to parkrun. We did notice some runners wearing the t-shirts and we had a few sleepy volunteers who also attended.

Now, back to parkrun - It has been 9 months since the Oranmore event, and it was only a matter of time before we started to celebrate milestones for our runners. Today was our first and it was fitting that it was one of our core team. Adam Leadbetter ran his 50th parkrun today, and we celebrated with balloons and tasty cake! did you get a slice?

 Junior parkrun launching in Oranmore!

We are in the process of starting a new parkrun in Oranmore! Junior parkrun events are for children aged between 4 and 14 years old. They take place on a Sunday morning at 9:30am.

They follow a similar pattern to the senior event, the main difference being the distance is 2km and and the event takes place on a Sunday.

These are really fun events and it will be great to have our own one in Oranmore. However, we need your help!

We are looking for people to help us organise the event. Maybe you are a Saturday runner who would like to give back to parkrun? perhaps you have children who might be attending, and you could volunteer on the day?

If your interested in helping or would like more information, send us an email (oranmoreoffice@parkrun.com), reach out to us on our Facebook page or come over for a chat some Saturday.

  • Cathal DALY (Norwich)
  • Fiachra SIDES (Sandgate, Brisbane)

From the briefing, I recall Dublin and London also being mentioned. If we missed any names from the list above, be sure to let us know so we can update.

WELCOME TO THE CORE TEAM!

Anyone who has attended parkrun in the recent months will have noticed our regular volunteer Bernie Rogers:

Bernie regularly volunteers as our tail runner and takes nots of the cool pictures you see on our Facebook page. She puts a smile on many peoples faces and is one of the most friendly volunteers.

She is a great asset to parkrun, and we are happy to have her join our core volunteer team.

If you are interested in getting more involved in parkrun and joining our core team, pop over for a chat some week after one of the events. We do get to take part in the events as well as volunteering ;)

NEW COURSE LAYOUT

As Oranmore parkrun continues to grow, we are continuously look at ways of making improvements. One of the areas we are reviewing is the location of the start.

January is a busy month for parkrun events. Operation Transformation is also returning to TV so we are expecting numbers to soar. Starting with todays event, we made the following changes:

1. The START will be at the crossroads part of the path (previously the finish)
2. The FINISH will be at the castle
3. The course will be run in the opposite direction

Our pre-event briefing is at the crossroads, which is the same location as our new start. For any regular runners out there, make sure you don't go to the castle as you will miss the start.

Here is a map summarising the changes:

Run Report: Event #14
5th November 2016
Event Photos: [Click Here]

Rinville park is a beautiful location for a parkrun, and today was no exception. The sun was bright, the sky was blue and the autumn colours were in full swing for event #14. Hopefully more of the same for the next few weeks before Santa arrives with the ice and snow!

Mountain View

Todays total attendance was 132, which is amazing for November! We had 63 Females, 49 Males, and the rest without barcodes / un-registered.

We had 34 first timers this week, which means there are still a lot more people out there who don't know about us! make sure to spread the word! 33 new PB's were set this week, congratulations to you all.

---------------------------
Tail runner
---------------------------

If you attended todays event, you may have noticed we had a tail runner. This is something we hope to maintain going forward.

A tail runner is a parkrun volunteer who walks and runs behind the last participant. They are clearly identifiable in a green high-vis parkrun vest. The event continues to run until the tail runner has crossed the finish line. This is to ensure no-one is left behind, and also provides support further back to any who may need it.

A massive thanks to Eleanor Leadbetter, who has been our tail runner for the past few events:

Adam Leadbetter, Mark McCormick, Norina Coppinger, Sean Devaney, Lisa Gilmore, Nicola Lardner, Cathy Lardner, Patrick Shine, Sinead Walsh.

Unfortunately we were unable to fill our volunteer roster this week, which meant that we were short. The numbers weren't as high this week so we managed okay.

In order for us to be able to safely organise future parkrun events and for it to be sustainable, we need more regular runners stepping up to volunteer. We only ask that each person volunteer 2 - 3 times per year. Its also a good way to get to know people and very rewarding  :)

Please have a look at the volunteer rota for the coming weeks, and let us know when you can help out:

Run Report: Event #7
17h September 2016

An overcast, but dry day for Oranmore parkrun #7. 169 turned out, our second biggest attendance! Can we improve by 8 to set a new record next week? :)

We had 48 first timers, 94 Females and 52 Males. A further 23 un-registered / without barcodes. Don't forget yours next week if you want a time recorded.

61 of you set new PB's, well done! those hills must be starting to become more levelled with all the running ;)

Points table
-----------------------
Each time you run or volunteer at one of our events, you earn points. The points are accumulated over the year per event. If your interested, you can view the current points standings from here:

http://www.parkrun.ie/oranmore/results/malepointstable
http://www.parkrun.ie/oranmore/results/femalepointstable

You automatically get a full allocation of 100 points the first three times you volunteer. Another reason to add your name to our roster some week  ;)

-----------------------
Athletics clubs
-----------------------
We had 11 representatives for different athletics clubs today. Tip - you can add a running club to your parkrun profile and it will show on the results page - a good way to promote your clubs.

Run Report: Event #5
3rd September 2016

The weather didn't start out great, but it certainly didn't dampen the sprits! 144 of your turned out today. We are super impressed by the numbers, especially in such conditions. Thanks so much from the Oranmore parkrun team :).

There were 54 first-timers this week, and we had 49 new PB's. This is great to see. It means we are getting a good flow of new runners versus regular runners. Thanks to you all.

This was also the first week we had more registered Male runners (64) than Females (62). Can the Females take the lead again next week?

Photos from todays event can be viewed [HERE]

Missing finish tokens
------------------------------
We are missing four finish tokens from todays event unfortunately. These are very valuable to us, and cost a lot to replace. If you have any of the following tokens at home, can you please get in contact:

  • 64
  • 85
  • 99
  • 121

-------------------
Volunteers
-------------------

A MASSIVE thanks to our volunteers who turned out today. It was greatly appreciated and without you, the event wouldn't have been able to go ahead. This weeks volunteers were:

Mark McCormick, Adam Leadbetter, Eleanor Leadbetter, Megan Leadbetter, Brendan Sheehy, Michelle McNamara, Cathy Foley, Bridget Wing, Niamh Lynch, Susan Mcgrady, Gearoid Moloney, Maureen Devaney.

If your available to Volunteer within the next couple of weeks, please please get in contact. If each person volunteered a couple of times per year, we would never be at risk of cancelling an event.

You can see the positions we are still trying to fill from the roster page:

Thanks again for joining us today, hope to see you all next week!
