The National Activity Plan was released by Healthy Ireland this morning in Ballybrough North Dublin with Minister of Health Leo Varadkar.
The objective of the plan is to get the nation active and parkrun is an activity specifically mentioned as the type of initiative Healthy Ireland are supporting.
Matt Shields country manager for parkrun commented.
“Today’s announcement is a tremendous stride forward in emphasising that collaboration is the key to making active and healthy lifestyles a habit for hundreds of thousands of inactive people. Employers, schools, sporting groups and community initiatives such as parkrun all have a crucial role to play in promoting the benefits of physical activity, and the emphasis on targeting disadvantaged groups and young people echoes the objectives of parkrun Ireland.
"We are delighted that parkrun Ireland has been identified as an effective example of how to create a fun and welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities who want to take part in regular exercise. In addition to the health benefits, feeling part of a community, increased social interaction and learning new skills through volunteering all contribute to a person’s overall wellbeing.”
