Run Report #77, 27th May 2017.

Rain and miles of smiles.

We just about had parkrun underway before we were met by a massive downpour. While it didn't deter the runners, it wasn't going to stop the volunteers either.  As usual, the parkrun community spirit was so evident with other volunteers stepping into assist with umbrella holding and sorting runners with soggy barcodes.  (Note:  a sandwich bag, sellotape or laminating will protect your barcode for future rain and sweat - yuck!).

We had masses of spectators line the 2.5k route at various locations to cheer on the wonderful boys from Scoil na Mainistreach, Celbridge who joined us for the second year in succession as part of Active Schools week.  They weren't a bit put off by the rain even though they were soaked right through on completion of their 5k parkrun.  Check out their own report from the day below.

The teachers, boys and parents from Scoil na Mainistreach weren't going to let a bit of 'drizzle' get in the way of their trip to Castletown parkrun. The boys had been in rigorous training over the last few weeks, practising their "laps" as part of the school's Active Schools Week programme. Everyone had a great morning running around Castletown. The many puddles offered some of our younger runners the chance to make a splash en route! Alan Lawlor (6th class) crossed the line as the first of our boys home. He was only a couple of yards away from catching Mr. Curtin who beat off stiff competition from the other teachers. We were delighted to have so many children from junior infants up to sixth class taking part in this event and we hope that our families continue to attend parkrun on Saturday mornings. As always we would like to thank Castletown parkrun for welcoming us to their event and for the tremendous support they gave to our boys. We look forward to coming back next year "</p
(Boys in mid air and little spectators making the best of fun in the rain).

As Run Director for this week it was such a pleasure to witness the boys competitive streak persist for the entire 5k.  Their behaviour was exemplary.  They are a credit to their school and indeed their parents.  They are welcome back any week.  Be proud boys... you are all wonderful!

Quadruple 50 milestone celebrations.

They made quite the spectacle of themselves, but in pure parkrun style, even though all four runners are of varying abilities, our four celebrity core team members, Marian Fagan, Niamh Drew, Peter Adams and our first 50 milestone jr, Alicia Ashmore crossed the finish line together.  They thoroughly their run and after a quick dry out and full change of clothes they pottered off to the Courtyard café for a slice of well deserved cake.

The crew would like to thank the abundance of volunteers who gave up their own run on Saturday in order to encourage, marshal and cheer them around the Castletown parkrun route.  They were very humbled with the support from everybody who made their day extra special last Saturday.

The Castletown parkrun community are playing an absolute blinder making those special moments for fellow parkrunners extra special.  If you would like to celebrate anything at parkrun, then definitely give us a shout.  It would be our pleasure to make your day as special as we can.  You know the drill... email, let us know what you're celebrating.  If it's a birthday, milestone, engagement or whatever it may be, we will do our best to make it memorable for you.

Visitors to Castletown parkrun

It wouldn't be a perfect parkrun without our visitors.  We were delighted to have a group of lovely ladies from Lucan Harriers.

UntitledWe were also joined by Judith Hayes from Albert, Melbourne (formerly Palmerstown).  Safe travels Judith.  It was so nice to chat with you.

And as if that wasn't enough to celebrate in one day...

We welcomed back Declan and Sheila Hynes, our two Castletown globe-trotters.  They missed the awards in October, but we didn't forget them for their efforts on the core team and they were presented with their core team medals on Saturday.

Lastly... but very importantly...

Many thanks to all the awesome volunteers for standing around in the rain for so long just so we could have fun.  We are all very grateful.

Phew!  There goes another exciting adventure at Castletown parkrun.

Looking forward to next week? I am.

Your Run Director for 23rd May 2017,
